The Science of Getting Rich

“The science of getting rich“ by Wallace Walters is a pragmatical guide that unfolds the ways of reaching success in every walk of life.

The right to be rich

The purpose of all life is development. People have the right to reach the highest stages of development that they are capable of.

There are three motives for which we live:

  • Body
  • Mind
  • Soul

Taking care of only one of them is not living a full life. It is neither right nor noble to live only for the soul and deny the mind or body.

Nobody can rise to their highest possible height in talent and soul development unless they have plenty of material possibilities. In order to unfold the soul and develop talent, we must have many things to use and we cannot have these things unless we have the money to buy them.

The only way to help others more is by making the most of ourselves.

It starts with a thought

All the forms that man fashions with his hands must first exist in his thought. He cannot shape one thing unless he has thought about that thing.

The way we do things is the result of the way we are thinking about things.

However, the way we think about things is as important as the action itself. It’s easy to think according to the appearance. To think truth, no matter of appearance is laborious and requires more power than the first. This is especially true when the truth is contrary to appearances.

It is difficult to think about health when we are surrounded by the appearance of disease or to think of riches when in the midst of the appearance of poverty. Seeing beyond what is requires power. When we have this power, there are no limits to what we can achieve.

Increasing life

Every living thing must continually seek to enlarge its life. Life, in the mere act of living, must increase itself. Therefore, a man wanting to become more, better, stronger is only the natural way of things.

A seed dropped in the ground produces a hundred more seeds. Life, by living, multiplies itself.

Our every thought we think makes it possible for us to think another thought, thus, consciousness is expanding.

We have to rid ourselves of the idea that nature or God has intended for us to be satisfied with little.

The true expression of the mind, body, and soul cannot happen in the absence of abundance. When we have everything we need, can we become better, more developed, increasing our capacity for living for ourselves and those around us.

Getting competitive or creative?

The moment we believe there is a sufficiency in something it’s the moment we lose.

Never allow yourself to think that all the best building spots are taken before you get ready to build your house unless you’re in a hurry.

Never think all the great jobs in the world have already been taken. Never think there is something that is in short supply.

Never get afraid that you will lose what you want because some other person “beats you to it”.

When we think like this, we are coming from a competitor’s frame of mind, believing that what we want is not enough for everybody.

If we are to live a full life, we shall do it by creating, not competing. When we get what we want, without robing the others of anything, it means that every other man will have more than what he has now.

“let’s suppose I own a picture by one of the great artists, which is worth thousands of dollars. I take it to the Baffin Bay and, by salesmanship, I induce an Eskimo to give a bundle of furs worth $500 for it. I have really wronged him, for he has no use of the picture. It has no value to him, it doesn’t add to his life.

But suppose I give him a gun worth $50 for his furs, then he has made a good bargain. He has a use for the gun. It will get him more furs and a lot of food. It will add to his life in every way, thus, it will make him richer.”

Being grateful

There are times when we think happiness is around the corner, the moment something happens. “I am going to be happy when I get that job”, but we forget to be thankful for the job that we have.

As Dale Carnegie tells us in “How to stop worrying and start living”: all that we have to concern ourselves with is the present moment, the here and now.

Do not bother whether yesterday’s work was well done or ill done, do today’s work well.

Do not try to do tomorrow’s work now, there will be plenty of time to do it when you get to it.

Do not wait for a change in the environment, to act on people or things that are out of your reach.

You can so act upon the environment in such a way as to cause yourself to be transferred to a better environment.

Do, every day, All that can be done today.

Misery comes from trying to do all things in an inefficient manner when we should do enough things in an efficient way.

In order to get where we want to be, we have to do our best with what we have now. If we want a better job, we should do our best in the job we are today.

We cannot ignore our present tasks in the hopes of what comes tomorrow. Tomorrow is only the result of our dedication and investment today.

Getting into the right business

All great men and women did things that had to be done to get them where they are today.

Much as “Martin Eden”, who had to wash laundry while pursuing a literary life, we have to do those things that are available to us to reach our goals. We should dedicate ourselves to fulfill the tasks at hand, irrespective of our future desires.

“Do all you can do in a perfect manner every day, but do it without haste, worry, or fear.”

Whether you choose another course for your life in the future, your actions for the present must be those in the business you are engaged in. Don’t allow yourself to neglect today in the hopes of a better tomorrow.

Don’t try to fill your present place with a view of pleasing your employer. Do it with the idea of advancing yourself. Advancement comes for the one who’s looking to advance himself.

For those living in an advancing life state, there is no such thing possible as a lack of opportunities.

Getting what you want

Doing one thing to perfection provides us with the equipment of doing the next larger thing.

Do perfectly all that you can do now and keep on doing it perfectly until doing it becomes so easy that you have more energy left after finishing. The moment that happens, you will get a hold of the work of a higher plane and begin to extend your correspondence with the environment.

Never wait for a change of environment or circumstances. They may never come. Make use of what you have now. Only the complete use of your current environment will place you in a more desirable one.

Invest in everything. Every transaction and relation of today must be turned into a stepping stone to what you want in the future. In order to accomplish this, you must put enough life to fill them. The surplus of power will cause your advancement and get you where you want to go.

Having a richer life

Respect yourself

Be just to all

Put life into every act and thought

Great things come as soon as you can more than fill your present place in every day!

Being rich means expressing fulfillment in every plane of your existence. Don’t dwell only on the business side of your life. You will not advance far if you are a good businessman or employee but a poor husband or wife or an untrustworthy friend. If you fail in these aspects, you will be incapable of using success for the advancement of life. In order to come under the operation of the evolutionary force, we must more than fill every present relationship.

Takeaways from “The Science of Getting Rich”

Life’s purpose is development. One cell divides and grows into two cells. Our purpose is to develop ourselves, more and more, every day. The moment we more than fill our present place and environment, is the moment we advance.

When we advance, we get close to what we want in life, which is a greater and stronger expression of ourselves.

Wallace Wattles’ book is a short but interesting read. It’s not a philosophical book but a pragmatical one, the core being that like causes attract life effects. What we make of our lives has an impact not only on ourselves but on those around us. Advancing means becoming an example and, at the same time, support for others. Being grateful and dedicating to performing everything to the best of our abilities is what a fulfilled life is all about.

Constantly growing and changing, developing, and learning is our only constant and what a great ideal we have before us.
